Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League or DLF Indian Premier League is a new seasonal cricket league series that is created and handled by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The new form of cricket, i.e. Twenty20 is played by various teams in this cricket league. The first season has started from April 18th, 2008. This year’s tournament has 8 teams participating and players from all around the world have joined in.

Each of the 8 teams are going to play a home ground match and an away match against every other team, which will be followed by semi-finals and then finals on June 1st 2008. Here are the 8 teams that were made for 8 different regions in India -

  1. Bangalore Royal Challengers
  2. Chennai Super Kings
  3. Delhi DareDevils
  4. Hyderabad Deccan Chargers
  5. Kolkata Knight Riders
  6. Kings XI Punjab
  7. Mumbai Indians
  8. Rajasthan Royals

On 15 January 2008, India’s Sony Entertainment Television and Singapore’s World Sport Group combined and took the global broadcasting rights of this tournament for the next 10 years for the cost of US$1.026 billion, which was divided into US$918 for the rights and US$108 for promotion of the tournament. The 8 franchises were won by various groups and celebrities, and the teams were announced on January 28th, 2008.

  • Mumbai Indians was acquired by Mr. Mukesh Ambani and Reliance Industries Limited.
  • Bangalore Royal Challengers by Dr. Vijay Mallya and United Breweries group.
  • Hyderabad Deccan Chargers by Deccan Chronicle.
  • Chennai Super Kings by India Cements and N Srinivasan.
  • Delhi DareDevils by GMR Holdings.
  • Kings XI Punjab by Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Karan Paul (Apeejay Surendera Group) and Mohit Burman (Dabur).
  • Kolkata Knight Riders by Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla Mehta and Jai Mehta (Red Chillies Entertainment).
  • Rajasthan Royals by Emerging Media: (Manoj Badale, Lachlan Murdoch, Suresh Chellaram).
